As the trend in computer downsizing continues, customers are asking original equipment manufacturers (OEM) for smaller platforms to use as software appliance platforms and small-site server devices.

ConRes, a top OEM of embedded solutions in the New England area, has developed several OEM custom build computer systems using mini-ITX motherboards. The mini-ITX standard defines a motherboard that is 6.7 in. x 6.7 in. Fitted into a small chassis, the final custom computer system can be as small as 7.5 in. x 4.3 in. x 2.4 in. The small size of the system is convenient for the user and simplifies shipping greatly. The shipping container for a mini-ITX system measures only 6 in. x 12 in. x 12 in. and weighs about seven pounds. By comparison, a 1U server typically ships in a 24 in. x 9 in. x 34 in. box that weighs over fifty pounds. 

Other advantages to the small OEM custom build systems are low power consumption, external (easily replaced) power supplies and minimal heat generation. A variety of mounting systems are available so the systems can be placed on a shelf or desk top, mounted on a communications panel, DIN-rail mounted or VESA mounted.

As with all the custom build systems the ConRes’ OEM and Embedded Solutions team builds, meeting the specific requirements of a client’s application is of paramount importance. The small size of these custom build systems does place some restrictions on the types of applications supported, but multiple Ethernet ports, serial ports, dual hard drives and powerful CPUs can still be accommodated with the small platforms.
